We designed My Living Curriculum for the Environmental Charter School (ECS) to improve the overall communication system between parents and the Lower School. We saw the design of a personalized curriculum book as an opportunity to bridge the school’s conceptual and non-traditional internal educational model to the common denominator parent who has only known traditional school systems.
The ‘living’ curriculum invites parents to actively engage in the school curriculum by completing 10-minute reflections with their child when he/she completes a project or milestone. Using the ‘knowing, doing, being’ language — the language ECS internally frames the curriculum around — the curriculum book exposes parents to the school’s educational philosophy and brings them into a closer conservation with their child’s learning and the school.
Over the course of one academic year, these easy and brief activities materialize into a complete My Living Curriculum book, capturing their child’s year-long ECS learning experience.
